Epidavros
Palea Epidavros is a village of fishermen which is located in a splendid bay, to
60 km in the south of Corinth.
Epidavros (Palaià Epidavros), old town
of Greece, on the Aegean Sea, in Argolide, on the East coast of the Peloponnese,
is famous for its universally known theatre.
Today, this theatre is always a
place living and accomodates, lasting the summer, the festival of dramatic art
ancient.
Thanks to its extraordinary acoustics and its successful esthetism,
this theatre is regarded as one of most perfect ancient world. Located at 13 km
of Epidavros, the théatre can accomodate 14 000 people at the time of splendid
representations of Greek Dramatic art. There remains today one of the places
more visited of Greece.
The universally famous monuments of Argolide (Epidavros, Mycen, Tirynth,
Nafplio) are in the immediate vicinity, of the same Corinth and its
surroundings. One reaches Athens in two hours in the car. One day excursions in
Olympy and Delph are also possible.

The Large
Theatre of Epidaure
To 12 km of the village, the
building can contain 14 000 spectators. It is composed of one orchestrated (the
scene) circular out of beaten ground almost 10 meters in diameter, surrounded by
horseshoe steps, divided into two levels by a corridor, the diazoma. The lower
level counts 32 lines of steps, divided into 12 kerkidès by 11 staircases. The
higher level counts 20 steps and 22 kerkidès. Lastly, the building of scene out
of stone and is equipped with a stage, with two side exits equipped with doors.
Acoustics of the theatre d.Epidaure is exceptional, it distinctly allows to
the last spectators in speaking top steps d.entendre of the actors with low
voice. Representations still take place there today.
The building became the
symbol of the ancient Greek theatre.
At present, one still plays there of
the tragedies of Eschyle and Sophocle.
The Guide of
Routard qualifies the theatre of "superb". "Practically intact", this last is a
beautiful success with perfect acoustics, the architectural harmony without
similar and the esthetism extremely well thought. The Guide affirms that this
place, one the most visited of of Greece, amply deserves the number of visitors
who come there each year.
Since 1954 Epidavros accomodated
representations of ancient theatre and events musical putting in scene known
artists of the whole world, Maria Callas, Monserrat Caballé, Mstislav
Rostropovich, l.Orchestre Philarmonique of Berlin under the control of Herbert
Von Karajan, or l.Orchestre and the Choral society of Scala of Milan, directed
by Claudio Abado.

Beaches of
Epidavros
There are several beaches
with Epidavros, some are accessible in the car, others with feet.
Beaucoups
